What is Typatone?

Typatone is a browser-based musical writing instrument created by designer Jono Brandel and music duo Lullatone in 2015. It works like a simple text editor, except each letter corresponds to a musical note, turning whatever you write into a melody.

The project followed their earlier keyboard experiment Patatap, but takes a quieter approach. Instead of large audiovisual effects, Typatone keeps the focus on your writing while the music plays alongside it.

What happens when you visit?

Start typing a name, message, or poem. Each letter produces a sound as it appears on the page, and you can play back the result as a musical sequence. You can also paste existing text instead of typing everything yourself.

Typatone offers six musical moods that change how your writing sounds. You can share your composition through a link, and the basic experience requires no account. Downloading your music as an audio file is also available as a paid option.

What makes it weird or unusual?

Instead of composing music with a piano keyboard or sequencer, you change the melody by editing words. Repeating letters, changing a sentence, or adding spaces alters how the composition sounds.

The notes aren't assigned randomly. Typatone uses English letter-frequency data to map common letters to melodic notes, less common ones to bass tones, and the rarest characters to accents. This gives ordinary writing a musical structure of its own.

Why is it on OpenWeird?

Typatone turns an everyday activity into something unexpectedly musical. It lets you experiment with how words sound, creating melodies from ordinary writing without needing to learn a traditional musical instrument.
