A stripped-down piece of internet horror where grainy video, distorted sound, religious imagery, and almost no explanation make one page feel like something you were not supposed to find.

What is This Is Not a Cult?
This Is Not a Cult is a deliberately cryptic horror website built around corrupted video, religious imagery, hidden pages, and the feeling that you have stumbled onto something without being given the context to understand it. People were investigating the site before its larger purpose became obvious, which is probably the best way to experience it.
Follow the trail far enough and it opens into a wider ARG connected to Black Angel Tapes and Bring Her Back. That explains where some of the mystery comes from, but I don't think it makes the original page any less strange. On its own, it still feels like a piece of disturbing media that somehow ended up loose on the web.
What happens when you visit?
There is barely a website in the normal sense. I landed on static, distorted audio, and a grainy video that takes its time revealing what I am actually looking at. Religious-sounding voices, screaming, interference, and a damaged-looking figure slowly emerge through the noise, but nothing jumps out or gives me an explanation.
Then I started looking beyond the obvious page. A hidden /wefoundyou route turns the experience into something much stranger, filling the screen with the same disturbing sentence over and over and, at one point, asking visitors to follow another clue. That was the moment it stopped feeling like I was simply watching somebody else's footage. The site had started asking me to participate.
What makes it weird or unusual?
What gets me about This Is Not a Cult is how little it needs to make the whole thing uncomfortable. The video is degraded instead of cinematic, the page barely explains itself, and the person staring through the static stays there long enough for me to start studying the image rather than waiting for a jumpscare. It feels found instead of presented.
The deeper material makes that feeling even stranger. Religious language becomes physical and invasive, hidden routes start addressing the visitor more directly, and connections lead outward into other pieces of the ARG. A page that initially looks tiny starts feeling like one infected corner of something much larger. The weirdness comes from never being completely sure where the boundary of the experience actually is.
Why is it on OpenWeird?
This Is Not a Cult is here because it recreates one of my favorite feelings on the strange web: finding something before I understand what I've found. If I arrived without knowing about Bring Her Back, Black Angel Tapes, or any of the surrounding ARG, I would just have a strange domain, corrupted footage, somebody staring back through static, and a lot of unanswered questions.
Even after learning what sits behind it, that feeling doesn't completely disappear. There are hidden routes, encoded messages, other websites, and clues that make one strange page expand into a much bigger rabbit hole. It is small enough to stumble across by accident, convincing enough to make me uncomfortable, and deep enough that one link can leave me wanting to open ten more. That is exactly the kind of internet horror I want OpenWeird to keep pointing people toward.
