What is The Deep Sea?

The Deep Sea is an interactive ocean-depth visualization created by Neal Agarwal and released on Neal.fun in December 2019. Rather than a conventional game, it uses one long vertical webpage to represent a descent beneath the ocean surface.

Agarwal has described the project as a love letter to the ocean, inspired in part by the nature documentaries he watched growing up.

What happens when you visit?

You begin near the surface with familiar marine animals such as dolphins and sea turtles. As you scroll downward, the depth counter rises, the water darkens, and increasingly unfamiliar deep-sea creatures appear.

You pass through the Twilight, Midnight, Abyssal, and Hadal zones, encountering diving records, the Titanic wreck, and other depth markers along the way. Near the bottom, the page recounts Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh's historic 1960 descent aboard Trieste, ending at Challenger Deep.

What makes it weird or unusual?

Most websites use scrolling to move between sections. The Deep Sea makes scrolling the measuring instrument, forcing you to travel through the distance instead of simply reading how deep the ocean is.

Marine animals, shipwrecks, and human exploration records appear along the same vertical journey. As the water darkens and the gaps between discoveries grow, the experience becomes both fascinating and slightly unsettling.

Why is it on OpenWeird?

The Deep Sea shows how a simple browser interaction can make something difficult to imagine feel real. There are no levels to beat or complicated controls to learn. Just keep scrolling and see how far down the ocean goes.

It's the kind of creative web experiment OpenWeird celebrates: an ordinary webpage transformed into an unexpectedly memorable experience.
